NGT – The Shape of Ugly Things to Come

The above photograph

The above photograph shows trolleybus wires cluttering up the view of the sky and beautiful buildings in Salzburg.

If the NGT trolleybus scheme is built, trolleybus wires will run all the way from the city centre, through the Headingley, Hyde Park and Woodhouse Moor Conservation Area, and on to Holt Park.

  1. I’ve been a life long Leeds resident and never understood why the city has never tackled its public transport problems. It seems the powers that be have gone from one catastrophe to the next trying to work a decent affordable clean and efficient system for Leeds. Personally I think we should invest in an underground system. It would be expensive but then again so are all the high speed rail networks the government are hoping to roll out shortly. It would be a robust system that is future proof and would serve Leeds and its ever expanding population for many years to come.

  2. As it happens, I’ve just been to Salzburg. The thing I noticed was how relatively quiet the streets were without the noise of bus diesel engines. When a tourist coach pulled up, I noticed the smell and noise. There are a number of quite narrow streets in the centre of Salzburg, and bus fumes would collect in these urban “canyons”, as they do in Edinburgh, where I live.

There is no denying that the wires are visible, but it doesn’t seem to deter visitors to Salzburg – though that would of course be difficult to prove.

Any damage caused to my visual system by seeing wires is surely less than the damage caused to the lungs of children in buggies (and others) by diesel fumes from conventional or hybrid buses.

Disclaimer: I am generally pro-trolleybus. I thought they should have been considered in Edinburgh as an alternative to the tram system that was eventually decided on, and which has taken considerably more trouble than anticipated to build.

  3. Perhaps Bill can explain how he adds pictures and sketches in this section or does he have special privileges to spread his propaganda that contain SO much misinformation.

  4. PAh another impact of this horrible white elephant!!! NGT must not be allowed to happen, it will destroy a special part of leeds that will not be replacable. All this whilst at the same time not having any impact upon existing car use!! All buses will probably be electric in a few years time anyway!!! HELP US STOP NGT!!!!

  5. David. It’s not possible for someone who is not a registered user of the website to add images in the comments section. Sorry about that.
